December 9, 2019—Proverbs 13:6

Righteousness keeps him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
– Proverbs 13:6

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

This verse teaches us to be those who are honest and upright in the way, for God likes upright and honest people. Just as God says, “You ought to know that God likes an honest man. God has the substance of faithfulness, and so His word can always be trusted. Furthermore, His actions are faultless and unquestionable. This is why God likes those who are absolutely honest with Him. Honesty means to give your heart to God; never to play Him false in anything; to be open with Him in all things, never hiding the truth; never to do that which deceives those above and deludes those below; and never to do that which merely ingratiates yourself with God. In short, to be honest is to refrain from impurity in your actions and words, and to deceive neither God nor man.” God’s words tell us why the upright and honest people can be commended by God, and also tell us the way to become honest people. Only upright and honest people can satisfy God’s will. No matter what happens, such people will never resist or betray God but be of one heart and mind toward God. They surely live under the care and protection of God. The later part of the verse reminds us that wickedness overthrows the sinner. We are corrupted by Satan and have a sinful nature, moreover, Satan is tempting us into committing sins and betraying God at all times. If we often sin without true repentance, we will live under the domain of Satan and be devoured by it as time goes by. Therefore, being an upright and honest person should be the goal every Christian should pursue.
