December 29, 2019—A Commentary on 1 John 1:6

If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
– 1 John 1:6

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

From this verse we can understand: If we verbally say we are willing to truly commune with God, but often cannot quiet ourselves before God to seek His will and practice according to His word when encountering things, often rebel against God’s will and do things based on our own ideas, then we live in darkness, do not have God’s enlightenment and guidance, much less have God’s blessings. Then our communion with God become letters and doctrines. This is cheating God. Just like the Pharisees, they spoke good words in their daily prayers and looked devout outwardly, but what they did ran counter to God’s will. They completely did not practice the Lord’s word and even resisted and condemned the Lord. This was being hypocritical and was cheating God. They did not practice the truth but did evil. So then, what should we do to have true communion with God? Firstly, we need to start with prayer. When praying, we cannot just follow a process, but should quiet ourselves before God with fear, speak from the heart with God, and seek the enlightenment and illumination of the Holy Spirit to understand God’s will. Secondly, we need to read and ponder God’s word often, put efforts into God’s word to understand God’s requirements and God’s will to us. Thirdly, we need to practice and experience God’s word. When we understand God’s requirements from God’s word, we can do things according to His requirements. When we practice in this way, we can gradually have true communion with God.

The man’s fellowship says, “Pursuing the truth and solving one’s corrupt disposition to be saved is the result mainly achieved by communing with God. Through communing with God, we understand more and more of God’s words; through communing with God, we gradually have a little knowledge of God’s disposition and God’s substance; through communing with God, we gradually develop a heart of obedience to and fear of God; through communing with God, we come to be more and more aware that God is most lovable, so that we can love God utterly and obey God unto death. All these results of growth in life and changes in disposition are achieved by communing with God. The more we commune with God, the more we feel that we want to speak to God, the more we feel that there are more problems we want to seek God and there are more things we should ponder and see through, so that we feel more and more brightened in our heart. Those who gain the truth can see through the world, the corrupt mankind, the people in power, the trends of this world, and the life, so they feel brightened in their hearts. They know how to be after God’s will, how to serve God to satisfy His will. All these effects are achieved by communing with God often.”
